Philip Ball Obituary

Philip Charles Ball, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully. Born on February 28, 1933, in Butler, PA, he was the son of the late Phillip Celestine and Mary Grace Sweeny Ball. Philip was the third of four children, cherished by his siblings Mary Louise Piroch, Evelyn Mae Ball, and Joseph Bruce Ball. A graduate of Butler High School in 1950 and St. Vincent College in 1961, Philip excelled both academically and athletically, playing varsity baseball during his college years. His career journey began with the Besseinger & Lake Erie Railroad, followed by driving a bread truck for Chantlers Baking Company. In 1955, he enrolled at St. Vincent College, later joining Commercial Credit Corporation, where he completed a management training program in Akron, Ohio, and served as a Loan Manager in Mansfield, Ohio. Philip also worked as Treasurer for Jeannette Corp and retired from Shusters Building Components in 1998. From 1982 to 1997, he was a joint owner of Wexford Foodland Grocery Store. On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1963, Philip married Virginia "Ginny" Lee Letto, a union he described as the best decision of his life. Together, they raised two daughters, Lori Lynn Ball Maretsky and Linda Dawn Ball Schuda, who married Stephen "Buddy" Schuda in 2001. Philip was a proud grandfather to Jenna Lynn and Rachel Amanda Schuda, whom he adored deeply. Philip lived a life filled with joy, sports, and community. As a child, he enjoyed baseball, volleyball, tennis, and golf, forming lifelong friendships through these activities. He cherished his college days at St. Vincent and spent many happy years watching his granddaughters play sports. A devout member of Holy Cross Church in Youngwood since 1966, Philip served on the Parish Council, acted as a lector, and was one of the original Extraordinary Ministers of the church. An avid golfer, Philip played nearly every day at Valley Green Golf Course, Pleasant Valley, Norvelt, and Mt. Odin, where he built lasting friendships. He was a man of integrity, deeply devoted to his family, community, and faith. Philip often expressed gratitude for the wonderful life he lived, surrounded by love, good health, and meaningful relationships. Philip Charles Ball will be remembered as a loving husband, an exceptional father, a doting grandfather, and a loyal friend. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 19, at 10 AM, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 711 Depot Street, Youngwood. Please go directly to church.
